About Us
PursuitSAFETY, founded June 30, 2007, in Chico, California, was incorporated October 30, 2007. The organization received its tax exempt status from Federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code March 28, 2008.
Our vision is to prevent the tragedy of pursuit and save lives: the lives of innocent bystanders who too often get caught in the middle of these chases and our peace officers.
By stopping unnecessary police chases, we will prevent deaths and injuries to the unsuspecting public and peace officers. We are accomplishing this goal by education programs, public service announcements, fostering pursuit research, and sponsoring and/or promoting legislation designed to strike an appropriate balance between the apprehension of drivers who flee and public safety.
Police chases kill an average of three innocent bystanders each week in the United States. These deaths do not occur because police are chasing murderers, rapists or violent felons. In fact, PursuitSAFETY supports chases for these reasons.
Police chases for non-violent offenders have killed more than 2,700 children, teens, and young and older unsuspecting adults since 1982! This number is underreported because reporting of pursuit fatalities is not mandatory.
Those killed are people going about their business — some walking home from school or driving to church, or going to work, or returning home from a family outing. None of these people thought it would happen to them.
If the reason for the chase is community safety, perhaps logic should prevail. Lives are saved when the police don't chase at all cost.
